Replace Patio Cushion Foam or Covers? How to Tell
Patio & Lanai · November 19, 2025 · 6 min read
Your patio cushions have seen better days, but here is the money-saving question most people get wrong: do you need new foam, new covers, or both? Guess wrong and you either pay for foam you did not need or put pretty new covers over dead foam that still feels like a park bench. Here is how to tell exactly what your outdoor cushions need.
As a shop that builds custom patio and lanai cushions, this is the diagnosis we run every day.

It is a covers problem if...
- The fabric is faded, chalky, or stained, but the cushion still has bounce.
- Seams are splitting or the fabric is thinning and tearing.
- You sit down and it still feels supportive, it just looks tired.
If the foam still springs back when you press it and is not heavy with trapped water, new covers alone may be all you need. Choose a UV-resistant performance fabric so you are not back here next year, as we cover in the best fabrics for Florida patios.
It is a foam problem if...
- The cushion stays flat or you feel the frame underneath.
- It is heavy and stays damp for ages after rain.
- There is a musty smell that will not clean out (mildew in the foam).
Flat, soggy, or smelly means the foam is done. And in Florida, the right replacement is quick-dry open-cell outdoor foam that drains and breathes, not the closed indoor foam that turns into a sponge. We explain density and foam types in Foam 101.
Covers are how it looks. Foam is how it feels. Fix the wrong one and you will be disappointed every time you sit down.
When to do both
Honestly, most older Florida cushions need both, because the same sun and humidity that faded the fabric also broke down the foam. Doing them together once is cheaper and smarter than redoing covers now and foam next season. The mildew angle is worth understanding too, which we cover in why outdoor cushions mildew in Florida, and the University of Florida extension service has solid research on managing mold in our climate.

Either way, far cheaper than new furniture
Whichever you need, recovering or rebuilding cushions costs a fraction of replacing your whole patio set, and you keep the frames you like. To make the result last, pair it with the habits in how to make patio cushions last longer in Florida. See outdoor work in our projects.
Frequently asked
Should I replace patio cushion foam or just the covers?
Replace covers if they are faded or torn but the foam still springs back. Replace foam if it stays flat, feels heavy, or holds water. If both are tired, do both, it is the only way to get a cushion that looks and feels new.
What foam is best for outdoor cushions in Florida?
Quick-dry, open-cell outdoor foam (often called dry-fast foam). It lets water drain through and air move, so cushions dry fast and resist mildew, which closed indoor foam cannot do.
Can you reuse my old foam with new covers?
If the foam still has good support and is not waterlogged or moldy, yes, new covers over good foam is a budget-friendly refresh. We will tell you honestly if the foam is too far gone.
